Reason: It used to be common advice – when attending a video interview, make sure you are dressed appropriately, and the background is appropriate. Find a quiet place with good reception and neutral walls. Then COVID hit. Candidates are dealing with many situations, from overburdened internet to co-habituating with children and family, to shared workspaces. In some locations, people cannot leave to find a quiet neutral space, perfection in internet connection is no longer a fair expectation, and neat and neutral is no longer a possibility. And those who are interviewing are in the same situation. Pay no attention to the background, and instead focus on the candidate and if they are the right person for the job.
